Guide: Deadface CTF Starter Guide

Deadface CTF 2023 was one of the most interesting and fun CTFs I have played in a while. I am glad I have joined through a friend’s recommendation. They have such a wide variety of challenges in many categories, suitable for both defensive and offensive teams.

Noteworthy is the quality of their challenges, the thoroughness of their preparation. I have to applaud them and give them credit in things they have done which I believe made this CTF more fun and enjoyable:

  • They have made an 18-pages long Starter Guide PDF with everything you need to get started and the entire backstory of the CTF. This is a must-read for this CTF!
  • Flag format is so clear and always with examples, leaving the stress of guessing what part of your finding is the exact string you need to submit. This saved me a lot of stress and guess work.
  • The challenges within a category or across different categories were interlinked just like in the real-world. So, your enumeration and solving of one challenge could unlock some information for other challenges.
  • Huge variety of challenges including Capstone! The following categories were included: Reverse Engineering, Pwn, Steganography, SQL, Cryptography, Traffic Analysis, OSINT, Forensics and a Bonus category.
  • A really good backstory and task descriptions!
  • Finally, an amazing team who are friendly and approachable and not there to tell off all the new players who are stuck. They wanted people to focus on having fun and learning experience rather than hardcore competitive and elitist experience. :)

Thank you!
